The theme Golden Old Times brought back to life the retro glam of the early 20th century and golden era of old Shanghai, when Hong Kong Fur Federation (HKFF) held its HK Fur Design Competition in early January. Budding designers won awards in seven categories. Winners of the Full Fur and Fur Combination awards can look forward to a one-week seminar at Saga Furs Design Center to hone their skills in fur craftsmanship.
“Winners in both categories were recognized for originality and creativity, commercial value and marketability, workmanship, use of fur materials, and the overall design concept of their collections,” says Samantha Vesala, Saga Furs’ Asia business director. “The vibrant palette of the collections drew all eyes to the endless possibilities of fur.”
Competition identifies and nurtures talent and is an exchange platform for the industry
The Young Executive Committee of HKFF presents the annual competition to encourage local young designers to flex their creative muscles so they can further explore new and exciting possibilities of fur design.
An international panel of judges reviewed 486 submissions to shortlist 15 entries from the Full Fur Category and 13 from the Fur Combination Category. The remaining designers vied for seven honours, including the Commercial Award and the Best Sketch Award, which was chosen by the followers of the competition’s Facebook page.
A highlight of the event was “Designers Love Fur,” a collection jointly presented by HKFF and HK Fashion Designers Association. Five local designers – Henry Lau, Hidy Ng, Otto Tang, Harrison Wong and Rock Wong, were invited to present creations that and showcased the endless possibilities of fur design.
